Watches and Safes

Watches

If you read the newspapers you may be surprised at the number of people whose expensive watches are snatched in the street. This is how it works

You buy your amazing new Rolex for £30,000 from a nice man in a shop who obviously needs your name and address for the guarantee etc. He probably offers you insurance in case you lose it.

A few weeks later ("let the dust settle") the nice man in the shop (or, less likely, another nice man at the insurance company) gives your full details plus a photo from their CCTV to a couple of guys who specialise in snatching watches

They duly snatch your watch 400 yards down the street from your house or maybe when you climb out of your car three miles away when going to work - this is all well planned so that it looks random.

They meet the nice man in a pub and hand over the watch and get £4,000 in cash for their trouble

The nice man sells the watch on the black market for £8,000 cash no questions asked (he has to be careful as it is numbered and may well be on a database of stolen watches)

Job's a good 'en as we say up North

Safes

You buy a safe and obviously need it installing ("hide it behind that picture please") so a couple of nice men come and do a good job of installing your safe in a secret place that nobody knows about ("behind that picture")

You ring a nice man at your insurance company and insure yourself for £100,000 cash (you handle large sums of cash from your chain of shops) .

Six months later armed men storm your house at 4am and demand at gun point that you open the safe. Which you do.

They depart with £70,000 in cash - their timing was lucky or well informed ("he always deposits large sums on a Monday morning").

Various people are all paid £2,000 in used twenties

Where are the Police?

In the police station filling in forms and chasing people who think that women can't have penises.

Moral of the Story

Don't wear an expensive watch - mine cost £40 from H Samuel and keeps perfect time

Don't have a safe

Don't deal in cash unless it is totally unavoidable
